After teeth whitening, eat pale, low-acid food and drink clear or white drinks. At The Smile Bar we ask you to keep this “white diet” for 72 hours. You don’t need to fast: you can eat straight after your session, as long as you choose the right things.
The short version
- Yes: chicken, white fish, white rice, plain noodles, tofu, bananas, plain yoghurt, milk, water.
- Not for 72 hours: coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, soy sauce, chilli sauce, tomato, citrus, chocolate, red meat, tobacco.
- The simple test: if it would stain a white T-shirt, leave it for now.
- The shortcut: with our Nano Protection add-on (750 THB), we lift the 72-hour rule and you eat and drink normally straight away.
How long after teeth whitening can I eat normally?
Our rule is 72 hours. Most guides say 48 hours, and a few say 24. We keep a wider margin because it costs you one more day and removes the doubt.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| First 24 hours | The strictest period. White diet only. If your teeth feel sensitive, skip very hot and very cold food and drinks too. |
| 24 to 72 hours | Keep to the white diet. Water is the only drink you never need to think about. |
| After 72 hours | Back to normal. Rinsing with water after coffee, tea or red wine helps keep your result. |
No waiting with Nano Protection
Nano Protection is a fluoride sealing varnish applied at the end of your session. It costs 750 THB. If you take it, our 72-hour food rule no longer applies and you can go straight to lunch. It’s the option most travellers choose when they don’t want to plan three days of meals around their teeth.

Sensitive teeth after your session? See does teeth whitening hurt?
Cooking method matters as much as the ingredient. Steamed, boiled or grilled plain is fine. The same chicken in soy sauce or curry is not.

Can I drink coffee after teeth whitening?
Not for 72 hours, unless you took Nano Protection. Coffee is the item people miss most, so here is how to get through it:
- Switch for three days. Water, milk or coconut water in the morning.
- Need the caffeine? Ask your pharmacist about caffeine tablets, or simply shorten the wait with Nano Protection.
- Already had one? Rinse your mouth with water straight away and carry on with the white diet.
- After 72 hours: drink it in one go instead of sipping all morning, and rinse with water afterwards. This also helps your whitening last longer.
White diet in Bangkok: what to order
Thai food is full of soy sauce, chilli, lime and curry paste, so eating out needs a little planning. The good news: some of the best-known dishes are naturally pale.
| Likely fine | How to order it |
|---|---|
| Khao man gai (poached chicken on rice) | Leave the dark dipping sauce |
| Jok or khao tom (rice porridge) | With chicken or fish, no soy sauce |
| Kuay teow nam sai (clear-broth noodle soup) | With chicken or fish balls. Don’t add anything from the condiment tray |
| Gaeng jued (clear soup with tofu) | As it comes |
| Steamed jasmine rice, sticky rice | Plain |
| Steamed or grilled white fish or chicken | Ask for no marinade and sauce on the side |
| Plain soy milk, coconut water, bananas | From any convenience store |
| Skip for 72 hours | Why |
|---|---|
| Thai iced tea, Thai iced coffee | Dark, strongly coloured drinks |
| Green, red, yellow and massaman curry, khao soi | Curry paste and turmeric |
| Pad see ew, pad kra pao, boat noodles | Dark soy sauce, dark broth |
| Pad thai | Tamarind sauce: coloured and acidic |
| Som tam, larb, tom yum | Lime, chilli, tomato |
| Satay, grilled pork skewers | Coloured marinades |
| Table sauces: chilli sauce, fish sauce with chilli, soy sauce | Colour and acid |
| Orange, passion fruit and other coloured juices and smoothies | Pigment and acid |
Three things that make ordering easier:
- Ask for the sauce on the side, then leave it.
- Say “not spicy” and “no soy sauce” when you order.
- Carry a bottle of water and rinse your mouth after you eat.
A 3-day white diet meal plan
| Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Plain yoghurt, banana | Rice porridge with chicken | White toast, egg-white omelette |
| Lunch | Khao man gai, no dark sauce | Clear-broth noodle soup with fish balls | Grilled chicken, steamed rice, cauliflower |
| Dinner | Steamed white fish, jasmine rice | Pasta with a cream sauce and chicken | Clear tofu soup, sticky rice |
| Snack | Plain soy milk | Banana, white cheese | Coconut water, peeled apple |
Staying in a hotel? At the breakfast buffet, go for plain yoghurt, white toast, rice porridge and bananas, and leave the coffee, juice and jam.
What if I slip up?
- Don’t panic. One coffee or one curry doesn’t undo your whitening.
- Rinse with water as soon as you can.
- Go back to the white diet for the rest of the 72 hours.
Brushing, toothpaste and mouthwash after whitening
- Use your take-home kit. Every package includes a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash. For later, see our guide to the best whitening toothpaste.
- Mouthwash first, then brush. Rinse with 10 ml of mouthwash, then brush with the toothpaste.
- Skip coloured products. Leave charcoal, purple or strongly coloured toothpastes and mouthwashes for later.
- Be gentle. If your teeth feel sensitive, use a soft brush and lukewarm water.
Does the white diet really matter? What the research says
Here is the honest answer: the evidence is mixed.
- In the lab, freshly whitened enamel picks up pigment more easily, especially in the first hours. Red wine and cola stain more than coffee.
- In clinical trials, people who followed a white diet did not end up with whiter teeth than people who ate normally. Two recent reviews of these trials reached that conclusion (2025, 2024).
- One trial did find that coffee drunk after whitening reduced the result slightly, and its authors advise limiting it (2020).
These studies looked at whitening carried out in dental clinics or with trays at home, and followed people for a month at most. No study has measured exactly how long the sensitive window lasts.
So why do we keep the 72-hour rule? Because it’s a simple precaution with no downside, and it covers the period when your teeth are most likely to pick up colour.
