Can I book a teeth cleaning on its own?
No. The Smile Bar is a teeth whitening studio. We offer Cleaning and Scaling to prepare your teeth for whitening, not as a stand-alone service.
Go to a dental clinic instead if:
- you only want a cleaning, without whitening;
- your gums bleed, are swollen or hurt;
- you have a toothache, a loose tooth or a broken filling;
- you haven’t seen a dentist for years and want a full check-up with X-rays.

What is teeth cleaning and scaling?
A professional cleaning removes what your toothbrush can’t.
- Plaque is a soft film of bacteria that forms every day. Brushing removes most of it. More on dental plaque.

Why have your teeth cleaned before whitening?
- The gel needs to reach the enamel. Tartar and plaque sit on top of it.
- A more even result. Areas covered by tartar can whiten less than the rest.
- A head start. Polishing lifts some surface stains before the whitening begins.

Your visit, step by step
- Arrival and briefing. We explain the visit and record your starting shade.
- Check. Our dentist looks at your teeth and gums.
- Scaling. Tartar and plaque are removed from the teeth and along the gum line.
- Polishing. The teeth are polished smooth.
- Whitening. One, two or three 20-minute LED sessions, depending on your package.
- Final shade and aftercare. You leave with a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash.
Plan extra time on top of the whitening visit, which takes about 30, 60 or 90 minutes. How long the cleaning takes depends on how much tartar there is.

Does teeth scaling hurt?
- Most people feel vibration and pressure, not pain.
- It can be sensitive along the gum line, especially where there’s a lot of tartar or the gums are inflamed.
- Gums can feel tender for a day or so afterwards.
- Tell the dentist if anything is uncomfortable. They can pause or go more gently.
When a cleaning is not enough
A standard cleaning works above the gum line. It doesn’t treat gum disease, cavities or pain.

How often should you have your teeth cleaned?
There’s no single rule. Dental associations say the interval should be set by your dentist, because tartar builds up at a different speed for everyone. Many people have a cleaning once or twice a year.
Between cleanings, brush twice a day and clean between your teeth. Tartar is also a common cause of bad breath.
